in the waiting room -
tabula rasa

Three hours of sleep -
this necklace of syllables
counted like tears

By the stream
a blackbird sings -
each day a clean slate

A mug of tea -
rumpled sheets in the bed-nest
and warm life stirring

~

Crisp-frosted lawn -
the heart in hiding
a pane of glass between

~

Three potted chillis
reach for light - an iris
escapes the frame

~

Ocean vestiges
found on far-away beaches
shine in their bowl

~

Walking-boots, rucksack,
map, hat, stick - waiting
by the half-closed door

~

The waterfall
where two ponds join -
lockdown laughter

~

They flash between reeds
with sudden darting ripples -
goldfish in water

~

The path clasps the cliff
so tightly it cannot fall -
the sea will catch you

~

Evening shadows
under quickening trees -
burdens of hope

~

Moon on the water
a tethered boat stirs -
the winter curfew

~

Among burning logs
two holly leaves crisp and curl -
the spent year’s crackle

~

Looking up I see
darkness and curious
watching stars
